Abstract

Electric power distribution systems are operating at low voltages. The total power losses in distribution systems are high due to low voltages and high current which in turn causes decrease in the voltage profile, increase in losses and cost of power. This paper proposes a methodology to plan distribution system by incorporating optimal allocation of capacitor to overcome the drawbacks. Optimal allocation of capacitor decreases the system losses and cost of power. The main objective function of the proposed work is to minimize the annual cost of distribution system by performing distributed power flow satisfying load flow constraints, voltage constraints, total reactive power constraints, power factor constraints, and capacitor rating constraints. Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), a newly developed meta-heuristic algorithm is applied for optimal allocation of capacitor. The performance of WOA is compared with Differential Evolution (DE) Algorithm. To validate the proposed work, simulations are performed on IEEE 33 bus radial distribution system. From the results it is clear that, voltage profile is improved and the annual cost and loss are minimized.
